Not every day goes to plan
Some days start heavy.
That Wednesday was one of them.
The mood was low.
I was frustrated with myself - replaying all the things I hadn’t done, all the ways I felt I was falling short of my recovery plan.
It’s a familiar trap:
You set the plan.
You don’t follow it perfectly.
And suddenly it feels like failure.
But instead of staying stuck in that space, I made a simple decision:
Get up. Get out. Reset.
So I drove to Howth Cliffs.
Not for anything dramatic.
Not to prove anything.
Just to move.
The part no one sees
The walk started -Open, steady steps, nothing complicated.
I followed the green loop route towards the port.
But on the way back, I made a decision that didn’t quite go to plan.
I tried to take a back trail along the village side.
It wasn’t really a trail.
It turned into rough, bushy terrain - uneven, narrow, and unpredictable.
Before I knew it, I was off the safe path.
Then came the moment.
I stepped into a wet bog.
Lost balance.
Fell backwards into a thorny bush.
For a few seconds, I just lay there.
Not dramatic. Not cinematic.
Just real.
And one thought crossed my mind:
“What if I can’t get myself out of this?”
The quiet fight
There was no one there to help.
No audience. No encouragement.
Just me — figuring it out.
It took a few attempts.
Slow movements. Careful effort.
But eventually, I got myself out.
Back on my feet.
And I kept walking — longer than planned, a bit shaken, but still moving.
The lesson I didn’t expect
That moment stayed with me more than the views.
Because it mirrored something deeper about recovery:
- You don’t always stay on the clear path
- You sometimes make decisions that lead you into difficult terrain
- You fall
- And in that moment, it feels uncertain
But what matters is this:
You can still get yourself out.
Not perfectly.
Not quickly.
But steadily.
Recovery doesn’t need to be dramatic
We often think recovery must look like big breakthroughs.
Major wins.
Clear progress.
But the truth is quieter than that.
Recovery is:
- Choosing to get up when your mood is low
- Taking a walk instead of staying stuck
- Getting yourself out of difficult moments - physically and mentally
- Learning to stay safe, not just strong
That day reminded me:
Recovery is not about pushing harder into danger.
It’s about moving forward wisely.
A small reset is still progress
By the time I finished the walk, nothing had magically changed.
But something had shifted.
The weight felt lighter.
The mind felt clearer.
Not because the day was perfect
but because I didn’t let it end where it started.
Final thought
Not every day will go to plan.
You will have setbacks.
You will take wrong turns.
You might even fall.
But you always have a choice:
Stay stuck — or reset and keep moving.
And sometimes, that choice…
is more powerful than any perfect plan.
